The most famous
bridge in Japan, the Kintai Bridge
(錦帯橋,
Kintai-kyō),
is an arched bridge in the city of Iwakuni, in
Yamaguchi Prefecture. It spans the Nishiki River in a series of five wooden
arches. The original structure dates from 1673,
but flooding from a typhoon destroyed it in
1950. The 1953 reconstruction, including partial restorations in 2001 and 2004,
still stands today.
This portfolio of
images was taken during the height of the cherry
blossom season when the weather was sunny and pleasant.
Visitors arrive daily by the bus load for "hanami"
(picnicking under the cherry trees) and
sightseeing in this beautiful location.
The castle atop the
hill that
appears in some of the images is Iwakuni Castle.
