Database search techniques
Use specific keywords rather than general ones. A common keyword word like temples will result in hundreds of images. Enter the specific name of a temple, such as kinkakuji. Or, enter a phrase that describes the temple, such as golden pavilion.
Be specific

Enter one, two or three related keywords separated by a space. Using more than four words is less likely to find a close match. Do not enter unrelated keywords like bonsai geisha sushi. Do an individual search for each subject.
Three words maximum

Do not use the words Japan or Japanese. All photos in the database deal with the subject of Japan. Enter stone lanterns rather than Japanese stone lanterns.
Avoid "Japan" and "Japanese"

Do not use articles or contractions such as: a, the, at, in, of, as, on, etc. Use only nouns, verbs or adjectives.
No articles or contractions

The search engine is bi-lingual. Entering the words kite battle or the Japanese equivalent takoage gassen will achieve similar results. Use only the English alphabet (romanticized Japanese) rather than Japanese script.
English or Japanese language

On the search results page, check the "Refine" button and enter the keyword vertical or horizontal. The new results will show only images that are vertical or horizontal in format.
Vertical or horizontal images

Under "Advanced Search" word stemming is set to automatic by default.  For example, if you enter the word walking the search engine will return results for the word stem walk as well as walking.
Word stemming

The search engine is NOT accent or case sensitive.  In other words, it does not matter if you use accent marks or capital letters, the results will be the same.  If accent or case are important to your search, check the appropriate boxes under "Advanced Search."
"Accent" and "Case" sensitive

Using + (plus) in front of a word means the word must appear in the results.

Using
- (minus) in front of a word means the word will not appear in the results.

Using
* (asterisk) after a word means that all words that start with the word will be in the results.

Using
? (question mark) in the middle of a word means any character can fill this position.
Using symbols
